Plagiarism. All submitted articles are initially checked for plagiarism and self-plagiarism, and for compliance with the journal's template.
Desk Review. Next, the editorial team performs a desk review based on the following criteria: International scope; Methodological clarity; Originality; Quality and topicality of references; and nature of descriptive or analytical research.
Blind Review. Articles that meet the desk review criteria will be sent for blind peer review; neither authors or reviewers are identified during this stage.
Each article is reviewed by at least two external evaluators who are chosen based on the theme of the articles, the theoretical and methodological frameworks adopted, and in some cases, the geographic area of the research. Any reviewer who may have some conflict of interest; for example, having previous knowledge of the study or come from the same institution as the author – will not be selected.
Preprint Review. BJR may also choose to include some submissions in the EmeRI preprint repository in order to speed up the evaluation process. In line with the Open Science practices adopted by the journal, authorship of the article will be revealed. However, this does not take away the originality of the article. More information about preprints here.
Editing Process. For accepted articles, the BJR editorial team may make formal, spelling, and grammatical changes which are carried out by specialized reviewers – after having consulted the authors.
Articles not accepted for publication in BJR may be submitted to other journals. A summary of the Editorial Process and the evaluation and publication deadlines for articles submitted to BJR can be accessed here.
Open Reviews. BJR reserves the right to fully or partially publish reviews issued for articles accepted for publication – provided that they are duly authorized by the reviewers. This practice is in line with the Open Science policy adopted by BJR.
